Cultural Immersion in France
by Student, Alexis R. , Tennessee

Bonjour from Aix-en-Provence! The past few days have been packed with new cultural experiences, and each day we experience or learn something new that we have never heard of before.

Thursday, after class, the group went to the art museum in Aix that displays the works of artists such as Cezanne, Picasso, and Monet. We then went to dinner at a small Normandy themed restaurant and ate in a cave-like, underground room.

Friday, we had morning and afternoon classes and then had free time, during which most students went shopping or to get snacks. Later, in our cooking groups, we made authentic Romanian food, introduced to us by our Romanian student, Monica. After dinner, students had the option to see an opera or stay at the residence. A few friends and I decided to see the opera, which was being displayed free for the public live on a screen in the park. The opera was in German with French subtitles, which was good language practice.

Saturday, we had a much-appreciated free morning to sleep in. The group then got on a bus to Marseille to visit its famous soap factory. After this, we went to a modern art museum and had McDonald’s too. Everyone was excited to see the differences between this and the McDonald’s in America.
