Looking to get an authentic experience of French culture? Want to meet people who will pick up on your accent américain and simply slow down their French rather than switch into English? Then St-Laurent-du-Var is the town for you! Located off the beaten path of mass tourism just fifteen minutes west of Nice, this southern beach village offers the perfect introduction to French language and culture.

During your month in St-Laurent you will experience l’autentique vie quotidienne of Southern France. By sharing daily meals and plenty of lively conversation with your homestay family, you will get a genuine glimpse into the life of a typical famille laurentine. Weekday classes, daily activities, weekend excursions, day trips, and events are designed to complement your homestay experience in order to help you make the most of the French Rivera’s famous summer lifestyle. Several weekly visits to neighboring Nice allow you to compare your newly-adopted suburban lifestyle to that of a larger city.

While in France I hoped to see the beautiful beaches of the Azure Coast and experience daily life in a French town. After my first couple days in France in addition to wanting to improve my language skills and experience French culture, I also began to have the urge to create a bond with not only the fellow students, but also with my host family. What has surprised me most about the Abbey Road home-stay program is the lasting impression that the trip has made on me and I seriously consider this program to have been a life-changing ...

Food

Your homestay mothers will make delicious food for you most mornings and evenings. Some of the local favorites include many varieties of seafood and pasta, such as the famous bouillabaisse, the signature specialty of Southern France, or gnocchis niçois, or pissaladière. Some days the group will also go on evening outings to local restaurants or outdoor picnics.

Homestay Life

No one will better introduce you to the French culture than your homestay family. Their home, which is typically located a short walk from the center of St. Laurent, will be the focal point of your study abroad experience. Though you will live with your hosts for the duration of the program, you do not spend every afternoon and evening “at home.” The program itinerary balances time with your family and time with the Abbey Road group.

On average, you’ll spend 3-4 evenings per week at home enjoying dinner and activities with your hosts or attending family events; the remaining evenings are spent with St. Laurent and Nice groups.

You will be part of our Abbey Road family, making new friends, learning to be independent and self-reliant, to share responsibilities with your peers, manage your time, and getting ready for college years!

Last Blog: St. Laurent-du-Var

by Kathryn K. It’s hard to believe that tomorrow I’ll be on a plane flying home. It feels like I have both known these people forever and yet it was just yesterday that we first met and had dinner. We’ve made so many memories in this last week and I feel like the fun is only about to start–if we had more time of course. ...

St. Laurent-du-Var Reflection

Looking at all of the different programs to learn French and spend the summer with was the easy part, but choosing one was the hard part. I chose Abbey Road because of the homestay option, the extended period of time abroad, the optional Paris extension, the group size (about 30), all of the excursions, and also because it was located on the ...

St. Laurent "Spectacle"

I can’t believe we only have one week left in France! This week was bittersweet as we were preparing for the finale of our program. The “spectacle,” or talent show, on Thursday was great, and it was a lot of fun to meet each other’s families. There was a potluck where each family brought something to share (there was a ...

End of Program Talent Show

My highlight of the week has been the end of the program talent show. During the talent show we joined the Saint Laurent group, some of which I met at JFK. We had dinner together and practiced our French. It was nice swapping stories with the other program. After we finished eating we moved to the stage where we put on a show. Both groups had ...

The Homestay Experience

One of the biggest reasons that I chose to come to the St. Laurent program was because of the homestay. This means that you can live with a host family during your whole stay during the program. I got lucky with my placement because I got placed into a house that is within walking distance of the beach, the mall, the city center, and also where ...
