This morning when I hobbled down to breakfast, enjoying the relaxation of the start of my summer vacation, my dad told me he had a surprise for me. He unveiled a sketch he had gotten for me of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence by Italian artist Dante Canasi (b.1889). I was overjoyed! He pointed out statues pictured – the bronze by Giambologona, the copy of Michelangelo’s David, and others that I will be seeing in a month from now.
We then looked through my dad’s own work that he painted a couple of summers ago on his own painting trip to Florence. He showed me a painting with a view of Florence and the unmistakable tower and red dome of Palazzo Vecchio painted from a nearby hillside. Yet, I wanted to see more!
With a quick Netflix search, I found the famous Florentine filmed movie, A Room With A View. It was wonderful! Florence was brought to life! It gave me a taste of Italian culture and pictured magnificent scenes of the Arno River, the Piazza della Signoria, and the Florentine countryside. I cannot wait to paint it myself!
