"Aaron had a WONDERFUL summer in Bologna. Thanks for the opportunity your program provided. He didn't want to leave Bologna or his new friends -- wants to live in Italy forever. It seems as though there was a good balance of freedom and structure. He loved his Italian class, of course, but also enjoyed the cooking classes. Really -- a once in a lifetime opportunity -- thanks!!" Sue and Wayne, parents - Norwich, CT
"I took Italian 2 last year and because of my studying this summer with Abbey Road, I've skipped up to Italian 4. My teacher even took me aside after I handed in my first assignment to tell me how I've impressed him and had the best work of my class. So, of course, I have to give credit where it is due...It really was a great summer and I learned a ton." Cara, student - Roslyn, NY

Our summer program in Bologna is a pre-college program for students in grades 9-12, with a focus on Italian language, culture and cuisine. Bologna is a safe haven for students seeking refuge from the annual throng of tourists which descend upon the rest of Italy each summer. You will find out what it is like to lead an authentic Italian lifestyle from attending the local gym to becoming friends with the café owners.
This program is for those savvy travelers who want to experience first-hand la dolce vita!
About Bologna & Northern Italy
Bologna is the largest city in the Emilia-Romagna region, situated between Tuscany and Veneto. The jewel of northern Italy, it is an elegant and sophisticated university town considered by many to be Italy’s gastronomic capital.
The University of Bologna is Europe's oldest university and is the alma mater of such classical authors as Dante and Petrarch. It is also a contemporary center of student life, popular with young Italians. Living in a vibrant, college town gives our students endless recreational possibilities from watching nightly movies in Piazza Maggiore to joining the graduation celebrations of Italian students near the main square fountain.
Optional Travel Extension
Students will also have the option of spending 4 days and 3 nights in Venice. A must-see for anyone wishing to experience the magical side of Italy, this city of masks and carnivals dazzles with its endless canals and overwhelms the senses with its aching beauty. Students will experience first-hand Venice’s unforgettable sites including the Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco and the Bridge of Sighs.

Academics
Primary Subjects: Italian Language and Cuisine
The academic component of the Bologna program includes two primary subjects in which all students will participate: Italian Language and Italian cuisine.
Italian Language:
The language course is three hours per day and focuses primarily on communication and daily usage. The city will be our classroom for much of the course, and the hands-on interaction makes the class not only fun, but more advantageous to learning the language! The Abbey Road Experiential Learning Method is designed to offer students an immersion experience that would be difficult to reproduce in a classroom in their home country.
Italian Cuisine:
The Italian cuisine course takes place two nights per week at a local culinary school in Bologna. Taught by an Italian family of chefs, the cooking classes give you yet another opportunity for Italian language immersion. You will learn the fundamentals of Italian cooking such as making pasta from scratch as well as many traditional dishes.
Elective Option:
Students will also have the opportunity to choose an elective course. These classes will be 3 days a week for 2 hours per class:
Italian Culture and Conversation:
You will spend extra time with Abbey Road faculty in casual settings to focus on improving your verbal proficiency and accent. Discussions will cover a wide range of subjects from music to cinema. We will take advantage of the café scene while improving conversation skills and having fun simultaneously!
In addition to the course offerings, the Bologna program offers recreational, cultural and artistic activities and workshops based on student interest. In the past, students have visited Giardini Margherita, shopped at open-air markets, met with the city mayor, attended live concerts at the Giardini del Baraccano, created their own version of Project Runway and even entered a Pasta Competition in San Lazzaro competing with local Italian chefs!
Housing
The Abbey Road group lives only a few blocks away from Piazza Maggiore, Bologna’s main square. Housed in two apartment buildings on the same quiet street, students enjoy living above both a tasty gelateria and pizzeria. The café on the corner is always the student hang out as the group quickly gains an appreciation for real coffee!
Typically, students will share double rooms within larger apartments. Female and male students live separately, while the staff resides in the same complex. Living in apartments allows students to be more independent while also giving them house responsibilities such as cooking and grocery shopping. We buy and prepare our own food for many of our meals using traditional Italian recipes created for us by an Italian chef.
Daily Schedule
Each week day begins with the Italian language course. In the afternoons and evenings, students will have options for sports and recreation, concerts and movies, cultural activities and workshops.
We strive to maintain a perfect balance between structured activities and free time. Consequently, in addition to planned activities with the Abbey Road group, students will have some free time to pursue personal interests, make friends and explore the town. While we give our students this privilege, we expect them to adhere to the program rules and safety guidelines, especially the policies on alcohol and curfew, and to uphold our standards of responsibility and maturity.
Day Trips
On the weekends, the group will explore nearby cities, including Florence, Modena, and the popular Adriatic beach town of Rimini.
