A Fantastic Start to A More Fantastic First Week in Nice, France

July 18

I was running frantically through the German airport thinking I was in the wrong terminal when suddenly I remembered there was a girl who was going to go to be on the same flight as me to get to Abbey Road’s Program in Nice! I decided to text her and ask her if she wanted to meet up somewhere in the airport so there was less of a chance of us getting lost. So we did just that! It was a good start to my trip. We talked and got to know each other better, which helped calm my nerves of arriving in a foreign country and not knowing a single person there.

Once we got through all the traffic and finally made it to the residence, I quickly realized there was nothing to be nervous about. The second we walked in, we were approached by all the fellow people that were part of the program introducing themselves. We had gotten there just in time for lunch. We had a very tranquil day where we got to meet everyone, tour around Vielle Nice (and see a multitude of adorable small stores), go up a bunch of steps to see a wonderful view and a waterfall, we ate dinner at a small restaurant (where we all got to talk to each other and bond), unpacked, and went to sleep after a long day of traveling.

PEEP PEEP PEEP it was 8:20 and my alarm was going off. I was quite confused as to where I was, but soon remembered I was in Nice and was about to spend my first full day here! I heard a knock on my door and proceeded to open it. I was delighted when I saw it was one of the girls I had met yesterday. “Hey! Are you ready? I was wondering if you wanted to go get breakfast downstairs before we take our placement tests!” She asked. I was hungry and she was nice so I decided to take her up on that offer. I was very happy when we got to the breakfast room and I saw baguettes, pain au chocolat, croissants, fruits, and a few other things!

After eating, we went to the ground floor where we were greeted by all the teachers/counselors. We all sat down and got the following instructions: “we are going to call you in one by one and ask you different questions to see where you are on the French speaking spectrum, and if you are not being tested you will stay in this room and play a fun game with Deborah!” (Deborah is another young counselor here) After all of us got quizzed we ate lunch altogether and then we were able to go around the beautiful Vielle Nice and wander around with our new friends.
